5 Things We’ve Learned Through 3 Weeks
Milltown managed to take down McCarthy’s bunch with a 6-4 win, in large part due to the meltdown of SF closer Brian Wilson
Actually, The Alliance only pulled ahead in ERA following the first out that Wilson got in that game. Either way, with him pitching or not, the result would have been the same.
Georgia by far faced the toughest schedule as they were up against the top 3 teams from last year
If you ignore the playoffs, this is true. If not, it's just 3 of the 6 playoff teams.
The Force have a very tough road ahead of them as they go Lima, Milltown, San Diego, and Georgia.
Which are ranked 11th, 1st, 2nd, and 8th in the standings. It seems more like a normal road with a rough patch in the middle to me. And at the end of the year, with 22 weeks and a 12 team league, the schedule evens out with each team playing each other team twice.
“I don’t hate anyone Daniel,” he continued, “…except for that asshole McCarthy.”
I agree, McCarthy is an asshole, although I hear his co-manager is quite the gentleman.
Huapaya looks as if he’s playing to get Aztecs pitcher Stephen Strasburg.
Strasburg has a pretty good shot at pitching in the majors this year, which means he will be ineligible for the minor league draft next year. If you meant the rights to draft him first in the majors draft, I don't feel he would be anything close to a slam dunk #1 pick in that draft (as he would be in the minors one).
Huapaya mentioned to some of his fellow GM’s that “he’s just off to a slow start.” Well Corey, you better figure out something quick.
Huapaya is currently in 10th place (not even last) and is only 4 games back from a playoff spot and 6.5 back of first place. Maybe it is just a slow start. It seems a little early to be writing anyone off.
Week 3 Roundup/Power Rankings
Of all the matchups last week, only ONE team won the majority of the categories.
Actually, FOUR of the six matchups saw one team win a majority of the categories. There were also two ties, where ZERO teams won a majority.
The Milltown fans are already chanting “Johan, Rich and pray for rain”
The Milltown fans are clearly not very clever. How about "Johan, Rich, and then we bitch?" Ok, so maybe that's not too clever either. Feel free to comment with your own suggestions.
The duel will be shown in HD on MLB Network on Thursday, and on ESPN’s Sunday night baseball.
I've got a feeling it won't be, since those networks show real baseball games.
[The Cods have] been competitive in every category this year, although their totals are below average.
The Cods are well below average in SB (9 total/14.5 average), W (10/12.3), K (124/170.6), and ERA (4.84/4.40). They are slightly below average in R (112/113) and SV (9/9.3). They are slightly above average in HR (30/29.8), RBI (122/115.8), AVG (.278/.275), and WHIP (1.34/1.38). Perhaps the reason they have been competitive is because they have so many stats that are close to average.
They’ve also pulled the first “rape” trade of the year
Is anyone else offended? Rape? This is almost as offensive as the Adenhart incident.
But seriously, is this trade as bad as it's being made out to be? Can Brandon Webb really help a team if he is injured and not pitching?
They just need to stop streaming for the sake of streaming [link to Bartolo Colon].
You had so many bad pitchers that he has streamed to choose from (Carl Pavano, anyone?) and instead your example is a guy who has pitched a grand total of zero innings for the Cottonpickers so far. He has, however, pitched 8.2 innings (putting up a glowing 10.38 ERA in those innings) for the team that you called the "ERA specialists," The Alliance.
David (I strikeout with RISP regularly) Wright
For his career, Wright has 151 K in 754 AB with RISP. So if 20% of the time is regularly, you are correct. Although he gets on base nearly twice as much (39.2%) as he strikes out, so how regular can that really be?
Whether it’s poor luck or the inability to get those hits with RISP, Ohio and David Wright were meant for each other.
Once again, 224 hits in 754 AB with RISP, for a .297 average. Not too shabby if you ask me.
12. Arlington Warriors (12)
I believe it's spelled Templars.
Whenever you can cut a “worst-case” 15/75 guy [Mark DeRosa], to add a “best-case” 15/75 guy, you gotta do it.
Mark DeRosa has been in the major leagues for at least part of every season since 1998. In that time, he has had exactly ONE 15/75 season, which of course was last year, when it was 21/87. That makes a 15/75 season seem far more like a "best-case" for him than a "worst-case."

Week 2 is a Good Time to Start
Welcome to the On Deck Fact Check, where we look at things said in the ODFB Blog, and explain where problems and inaccuracies arise. Quotes are in italics, comments aren't.
Starting with 5 Things We’ve Learned Through 2 Weeks
Huapaya’s Playas stingy GM, Corey Huapaya, has taken a liking to...Kurt Suzuki(Shoppach and Inge are on the waiver wire)
While I would agree there are better catching options available (Yadier Molina perhaps?), I don't see why Shoppach was one of the two you chose here. His season rank is pretty bad so far (663 compared to Suzuki's 729) and Suzuki has had nearly twice as many at bats (45 to 24). I don't see a line of zeroes to be better than what Suzuki can give him on any given day.
The Force have been average in every other [non-HR] offensive category
Well, technically, they've been slightly above average in R (80 compared to 76.25), RBI (81/79.25), and AVG (.278/.272), and below average in SB (7/9.92)
The Milltown Monsters pitching staff has struck out the most in the league (averaging well over 1K per IP)
If by "well over" you mean "slightly fewer than," I agree with you. Don't get me wrong, 171 K in 174.1 IP for a 0.98 K/IP is still impressive, but it isn't close to as impressive as you present it with your false figures. In fact, it isn't even the best in ODFB (Ohio has 110 K in 111 IP for a 0.99 K/IP).
The Monsters are tied for 3rd in wins, but that might have to do with their recent streaming ways
In fact, only 2 of Milltown's 10 wins have come from a streamed pitcher, who was added for one start and then dropped the following day.
Jordan Zimmerman makes his first start of the year tonight
Don't shortchange Zimmermann in the letters department.
As for as the Stingers go, you would think having 4 of the top 10 pitchers in baseball
Well, if you go by rank, they only have 1 of the top 10 pitchers (and I doubt you meant to include Heath Bell among your 4). But since this is early in the season, it is hard to go by rank. Even by O-Rank, however, they have only 3 of the top 10. They have 4 of the top 14. And if you're going by final rank last year, it's only 2 of the top 10.
picking up a dead player VIA the waiver wire
It wasn't the waiver wire, it was free agency. Who would waste waiver priority on a dead guy?
And on to Week 2 Roundup/Power Rankings
Another big jump in the power rankings this week for McCarthy’s bunch
Why does McCarthy get all the credit? There is a co-manager you know. His name was posted in the forums, but then his posts were deleted for some reason.
They posted a very impressive 15 steals this week, which is more than what almost half the league posted in week 1 COMBINED.
This simply isn't true. If you take the average steals per team from week 1 and multiply it by 6 to get the average for half the league, you get 27.5, which is significantly more than 15. Even if you look at the bottom half of the league (the six lowest steals teams) from week 1, their steals total is 16, which, once again, is more than 15.
The Andre Ethier for Valverde trade is making more and more sense
It would make sense, if the trade had been Ethier for Valverde. The trade was actually Valverde for a draft pick that was then used on Ethier. The Alliance never had Ethier on their team, and would not have taken him with that pick. While it still appears to be a good trade for Walla Walla, the trade was not as it is presented here.
With 2 of their main power sources playing in the largest park EVER
I assume this is just hyperbole. If it isn’t, let me know, and I’ll explain why you’re wrong.
Led by extra base machine Nick Swisher
He has been an extra base hit machine so far, but then again, so has Freddy Sanchez. Does anyone expect either one to keep it up?
LT squeaked out a win in K’s, despite pitching more than 75% more innings than The Alliance
It wasn't more than 75% more innings. It was, in fact, exactly 75% more innings, 65.1 to 37.1.
The Alliance showed no class picking up Nick Adenhart this week, just days after SCF had retired his number.
I must have missed the ceremony where the number was retired. I was too busy living in reality. But seriously, how can Conor Jackson stay on the team if his number has been retired by them?
And since you act like these are real teams, look at it this way: now Adenhart has twice as good a chance of "getting a championship ring."
Way too soon fellas.
So if The Alliance had waited another few weeks and then added Adenhart, that would have been the classy thing to do? Or did you mean his life ended way too soon? Because I'll agree with that one.
Here’s your random hitter [Brandon Phillips]...that sucked, even though [he's] really good in reality.
Is he though? He put up a .261/.312/.442 last year, when he was only the 8th best fantasy 2B by Yahoo rank. That doesn't seem "really good" to me.
And finally, reading through the blog, I couldn’t believe how many spelling/grammar mistakes there were. Does anyone spell check or read their stuff over after it’s written to make sure there’s no mistakes? I’ll just list some of them here:
That is it for this week, we'll see how things go next week.

- there is no clear cut dominate team in the field with 1-8 being separated by just 2 games.
- We’ve seen some dominate offense in week 1 from Georgia
- one of the favorite’s to take the 2009 title
- I’m not talking about the offensive muscle, because their virtually hasn’t been any.
- their ERA and WHIP has sky-rocketing to +5 and +1.40
- As for as the Stingers go
- unbelievably team speed from The Alliance
- Yoheru take down the former #1
- Powered there way up three spots from last week
- Ethier is loving Manny being Manny head of him
That is it for this week, we'll see how things go next week.
